We Broke Through the Chains Holding Us Back

Aloha, My name is Hazel-Rose Kamaka’ona’onaokamalani Nāhi‘ena‘ena and I am a survivor of Domestic Abuse / Sexual Abuse for 17yrs, & Rape my Highschool senior year. I have fought all my life as a Boxer / MMA fighter, but my hardest battles were mental, spiritual, & emotional. I have suffered from PTSD, Anxiety, & Depression, & I have had multiple concussions and injuries throughout the abuse sustained. My father was an ex-Marine, he suffered from bipolar disorder, and multiple personality disorder, he also suffered from depression, anxiety and so on, and was a user of steroids. Because of his sickness, he was a very abusive person to myself and all of my family. We were in a constant state of fear for our lives. But it was only when I finally came out about his sexual abuse towards me to which I had endured for years, that we were finally able to send him to prison. Since then my ‘Ohana and myself have fought long and hard to heal from our many hardships and trauma. Within these last few years we had a huge shift in our lives, we refused to let depression take our lives though we had all attempted. We broke through the chains holding us back and have all found a way forward. I am proud to say that even though the healing will always be a challenge, I as well as my family are now flourishing in various endeavors. I became an enlisted member of the Hawaii Army National Guard, a National title pageant Queen, am a local Singer/Songwriter with Mana Maoli, and continue with my fight career. My mom is a local artist as well, an actress, and is currently putting out a movie based on the true events of our lives. I write these pieces of my testimony in hopes that it will remind someone, anyone, that the hearts and minds of our people are stronger than we believe, and that warriors were meant to be battle tested so that when the time comes, WE WILL WIN THE WAR. Me Ke Aloha Pau Ole!
